In today’s episode, I’m sharing one of the most game-changing team bonding activities I’ve ever experienced: season dedications. So often, we as players or coaches just think “okay, whatever we need to do to win and bring home the prize.” But what is that teaching our players? When your players are dedicated to one another and are doing what they are doing for someone else, that changes the entire perspective of what you are doing.

When you’ve dedicated your season to another teammate, it no longer becomes about you. When you have practice, you better be there, be there on time, and give it your all, because you're doing it for your teammate. Even if you’re sitting on the bench and someone else is playing in the position that you want, with this exercise, you’re still showing up for them, if not for yourself.

I have had major success with this activity. In this episode, I share about a conversation that I had with one of the girls on a high school team that I am coaching right now. She was playing through an injured foot and said that she wished she could be running because she felt bad that the girl her season was dedicated to was running and she wasn’t. It’s because she wasn’t doing it for herself. I hope that you take this activity to your team. Please feel free to let me know how it works out!

3 key takeaways from this episode:

  • Dedicating your season to another player

When you’re no longer doing the daily team “things” for you, you are able to see past yourself and your own motives to be able to push through and rally for someone else.

  • Creating an “others-focused” team

If your team is focused outwardly and on others, the goal is no longer to be better than everyone else to glorify yourself. The goal becomes doing something for someone else so that everyone benefits.

  • Embracing accountability through this activity

Having accountability in every season of life is necessary. Some people may think that being on a team is the best way to stay accountable. This statement is true, but what if you weren’t just staying accountable to stay accountable, and you were doing it to dedicate to someone else. You’re accountable from every angle.
